Before Independence, Tamil Nadu is recognized to be Madras Presidency . Later it named as Madras State after Independence. In 1956, Madras State was prepared up of 13 Districts. Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Madras, Madurai, Nilgiris, North Arcot, South Arcot, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, and Tirunelveli. On January 14, 1969, Madras State was officially titled as “Tamil Nadu State” by C.N. Anna Durai, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
