Tamilnadu
Districts of Southern Tamil Nadu are Dindigul, Kanyakumari,
Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Theni, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Virdhunagar
Dindigul
The name “Dindigul” (Thintukkal) comes from a
combination of the Tamil words dind “pillow”
and kal “rock” and refers to the plain hill
located in the city. Dindigul district is famous for Safety Lock Makers,
Leather Tanneries, Spinning Mills, Farming Machinery and Trading’s etc

Dindigul district was established on 15 September 1985.
Dindigul was separated from Madurai District.
Kanniyakumari
Kanniyakumari is south most district in Tamil Nadu and
India. Kanniyakumari district ranks second in population density following only
to Chennai district. It is the richest district in Tamil Nadu in terms of per
capita income.
The capital of the Kanyakumari district is
Nagercoil. Kanyakumari is earlier known as Cape Comorin.

Kanniyakumari district was established on 1 November,
1956.
Madurai
Madurai district is the ninth leading population
districts in Tamil Nadu. Madurai district is one of the oldest city in Tamil
Nadu. Famous Meenakshi Temple is situated in the banks of Vaigai River and Oldest
Islamic Mosque “Kazimar Big Mosque” is situated in the banks of Kiruthumal
River.
The district capital “Madurai” is also known as Thoonga
Nagaram which means “The city which never sleeps”

The economy of Madurai District mainly depends on
Farming. It is famous for its Jasmine plantations “Madura Malli”. Madurai
districts have sizable small scale industries such as Rubber Based Industries,
Automobile Manufactures, Textile, Granite, Chemical and Car Industries.
Madurai is considered as Tier 2 city for IT. HCL and Honeywell are the two corporate firms
having their campuses in Madurai (ELCOT IT Park)

Madurai district was established on 1 November 1956.
Ramanathapuram
Ramanathapuram district is also known as “Ramnad”.
Ramanathapuram is renowned since Puranic ages. Ramanathapuram district has
Rameshwaram which is Holy place for Hindus as a centre of pilgrimage and Ervadi
Dargah where Muslim comes for Ziyarat.
Rameshwaram is also the birthplace of Dr A. P. J.
Abdul Kalam (Former President of India)

The Ramad district is the highest producer of Chilli Pepper in
Tamilnadu.

Ramanathapuram district was established on 1 November,
1956.
Sivaganga
Sivagangai is also known as “SivaGangai”. Sivaganga district
is one of the most backward out of total 6 districts in Tamil Nadu. Graphite is
one of the common and valuable resources in Sivagangai surroundings. Majority of the population depends on Agriculture. Some industries are Sugar Mills, Sapphire
Industries. 1st Red soil Dryland Research Centre was established in
Sivagangai by Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.

Sivagangai district was established on 15 March 1985
Sivaganga and Virudhunagar districts separated from Madurai and Ramanathapuram.
Theni
Theni district is located nearby Madurai, and Theni is
the district capital. Theni crowds second largest weekly market in Tamil Nadu
and fourth largest in South India.
Theni district economy depends on Agriculture. The
district produce Sugarcane, Millets, Muscat Grapes (Paneer Dhrakshai), Garlic,
Cardamom, Mango and Chilli.

Theni district was established on 25 July 1996.
Theni district separated from Madurai district.
Thoothukudi
Thoothukudi district is also identified as Tuticorin
District. Thoothukudi is recognized as "Pearl City" because of Pearl
fishing. It is profitmaking seaport which serves the internal cities of Southern India and
is one of the sea entries of Tamil Nadu. Tuticorin port is one of the oldest and
biggest harbours in Tamil Nadu.
Thoothukudi district produces 70% total Salt production
for Tamil Nadu and 30% to India. The major industries are Shipping, Fishing,
Agriculture, Chemical and Power Industries.

Thoothukudi district was established on 20 October 1986.

from Tirunelveli.
Tirunelveli
Tirunelveli districts is the biggest in terms of space in
Tamil Nadu with Tirunelveli as its capital. Tirunelveli district was prepared
in 1790 by British East India Company (British Government). Tirunelveli
district had different names in past such as “Thenpaandiyanaau” (Pandiyan
Dynasty), “Mudikonda Cholamandalam” (Chola Dynasty), “Tirunelveli Seemai”
(Madurai Nayaks).
Tirunelveli has been constantly an agricultural land
during its past. Tirunelveli district majorly produce Rice, Coconuts, Spices,
Bananas. This district is home to nearly 50% buffalo population of Tamil Nadu. The fishery is also one of the major production centres.
India cement is 3rd largest Cement
industry in India, which began at Shankar Nagar at Tirunelveli in 1949.

Tirunelveli district was established on 1 November 1956.
Virudhunagar
The biggest city in Virudhunagar district is
Rajapalayam. Virudhunagar district is leading in India in the Match Industry,
fireworks, printing. Also, it serves the main marketplace for Oil, Chicory, Coffee
seeds, Pulses and Dry chillies.
Virudhunagar is the origin of Freedom fighter, Former
CM of Tamilnadu, Bharat Ratna Awardee Mr K. Kamaraj.
Population: 2,105,930
Virudhunagar district was established on 15 March 1985.
Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts separated
from Madurai and Ramanathapuram.
