Districts of Tamil Nadu State - North



Before Independence, Tamil Nadu is recognized to be Madras Presidency. Later it named as Madras State after Independence.

In 1956, Madras State was prepared up of 13 Districts.
Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Madras, Madurai, Nilgiris, North Arcot, South Arcot, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, and Tirunelveli.

On January 14, 1969, Madras State was officially titled as “Tamil Nadu State” by C.N. Anna Durai, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Districts of Tamil Nadu are divided into four regions North, South, West, and Central

Northern Tamilnadu


Districts of Northern Tamil Nadu are Chennai, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Viluppuram, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Kallakurichi.

Chennai

Chennai, in the past known as Madras district. It is one of the smallest districts with a high-density population. Most of the Metro region comes under Chennai district.  Chennai was formerly known as Madras till 1996. This district comes under City districts so that I don't have any headquarters.

Chennai district was established on 1 November 1956.

Vellore

VIT, Vellore

Vellore is the city and governmental capital of Vellore district, situated in the banks of Palar River. Vellore district is famous for Hospitals, Education Institutions, Leather Exports, etc…
One of the best Indian Hospital is present in Vellore which draws Medical Students and Patients from crossways the country.
Population: 3, 36,331
Vellore district was established on 30 September 1989.
Previously Tiruvannamalai and Vellore are jointly known as North Arcot Districts.
Tourist Places: Vellore Fort, Yelagiri, Sri Puram Golden Temple, Amirthi Forest, Rathnagiri Temple, etc..

Thiruvannamalai

Annamalai Temple, Thrivannamalai

Thiruvannamalai is one of the most olden legacy sites of India. Thiruvannamalai temple is a center of the Saiva religion and temple attracts a big number of followers for Deepam Festival.
Population: 4,164,875
Thiruvannamalai district was established on 18 October, 1991.
Previously Tiruvannamalai and Vellore are jointly known as North Arcot Districts.
Tourist Places: Arunachaleshwar Temple, Annamalai Temple Viewpoint, Sathanur Reservoir, etc...

Cuddalore

Pichavaram - Mangrove, Cuddalore



Cuddalore is one of the ancient port towns in history. Major foreign trades from British, French happens here. The economy of Cuddalore mainly depends on fishing and a few other industries are Chemical, Pharmacological, and Energy industries. This district highly contributes to the production of Cashew and Jackfruit.

Cuddalore district was established on 30 December, 1993.
Previously Cuddalore and Viluppuram are jointly known as South Arcot Districts.
Tourist Places: Thillai Nadaraajar Temple, Silver Beach, Veeranam Lake, Pichavaram, etc..

Viluppuram




Villupuram is also meant as Vizhupuram. Gingee fort in Viluppuram district is one of the ancient fort available in India.
Population: 3, 458,873
Viluppuram district was established on 30 December, 1993.
Previously Cuddalore and Viluppuram are jointly known as South Arcot Districts.
Tourist Places: Matri Mandir, Auroville, Gingee Fort, etc..

Kanchipuram


Kancheepuram (Kanchipuram) is one of the ancient city in Southern India. Kanchipuram is considered as a holy city for pilgrimages. The economy of Kancheepuram district depends on Agriculture, close to half of the population is engaged with Agriculture. Palar River acts as the main resources for the irrigation.
Population: 3, 998,352
Kanchipuram district was established on 1 July 1997.
Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts are separated from Chengalpattu District.
Tourist Places: Kamakshi Amman Temple, Ekabaranathar Temple, Anna Memorial, Vaikunta Perumal Temple, etc...

Thiruvallur

Thiruvallur is formerly known as Thiru-evallur. Thiruvallur is closer to Chennai so it transmits a combination of Rural and Urban characteristics. Thiruvallur is one of the fastest emerging districts in standings of Industrial Development. This district has 6 Government and 3 Private Industrial estates, all in functioning.
Population: 3, 728,104
Tiruvallur district was established in 1, July 1997.
Previously Kanchipuram and Thirvallur are jointly known as Chengalpattu Districts.
Tourist Places: Thiruttani Murugan Temple, Dutch Cemetry, Dutch Chruch, Queens Land Amusement Park, etc..

Kallakurichi

This District is very new which came to reality on 8 January, 2019, is considered as the largest district of the state before division. Kallakurichi the district is one of the emerging districts in terms of Agriculture.
Kallakurichi is separated from Viluppuram District.
Tourist Places: Megam Falls, Periyar Falls, Gomukhi Dam, Kalvarayan Hills, Boating House, etc..
